Our story
More than a market.
A promise to the neighborhood.
Karmel Market was built just off Lake Street with one belief: that a great grocery store can feed a community — and bring it together.
Why we exist
We set out to build a market where everyone belongs — where Somali, Latino, East African, and longtime Minnesota families all find the foods they grew up with, side by side.
Our corner of Lake Street is one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in Minneapolis — and one that's too often overlooked. We believe this community deserves a beautiful, clean, well-stocked market with quality food at fair prices. Not someday. Now. Karmel Market is our answer: two full floors of fresh food, imported goods from around the world, and a gathering place that belongs to all of us.
The founder
A vision for Lake Street.
The vision for Karmel Market belongs to Basim Sabri — a developer, entrepreneur, and longtime champion of Minneapolis's immigrant communities. For decades, his name has been tied to the growth of this corridor, from Karmel Mall to the businesses and families who call it home.
He imagined a market that treats this neighborhood the way every neighborhood deserves to be treated — with quality, dignity, and pride. (Ask the team upstairs about the "Basim Burger" — yes, it's named after him.)
Today, that vision is carried forward by Karmel Grocery LLC — the independent company that owns and operates the market day to day.
When a neighborhood has a market it can be proud of, the whole community rises with it.— The vision behind Karmel Market
Owned & operated by Karmel Grocery LLC
Family-run, every day.
Karmel Market is owned and operated by Karmel Grocery LLC — an independent company, separate from Sabri Properties. It's run day to day by Mo and Katy, keeping the market personal, local, and rooted in family.
What makes us, us
Built different on purpose.
Two floors & cart escalators
Shop Level 1, ride up to the food hall — with escalators built to carry your cart right alongside you.
Foods from everywhere
Halal meats, East African staples, Latino favorites, and imported goods you won't find anywhere else nearby.
Honest prices
Big-store quality without the big-store markup — at prices that consistently beat the chain stores.
A place to gather
A full food hall with room to sit, eat, and connect. Come for groceries — stay for the community.
Part of something bigger
One building, one community.
Karmel Market anchors the first two floors of a six-story building on Pleasant Avenue — a hub developed and stewarded by the Sabri Properties family, with deep roots in this neighborhood.
From the market on the ground floors to the events at Karmel Grand Hall above, it's all built around one idea: investing in this community and giving it spaces worthy of its people. And we're only getting started.
Come see for yourself
There's a place for you at our table.
